Your Beliefs become your Thoughts . Your Thoughts become your Words.Your Words become your Actions.Your Actions become your Habits.Your Habits become your Values.Your Values become your Destiny.
When we become Conscious of our Values, we change our Behaviour to create the life and world we want.
Many of us hold beliefs based on little more than what we are taught as kids, into which we mix cognitive and emotional reactions based on our experiences as we grow. For me, the battle with my “given” beliefs, that it is natural and important to consume animal products to meet my nutritional needs, against my “found” belief that Veganism is kinder to our health, kinder to Non-Human Beings and essential for Our environment, was easy won. I reasoned at an early age that it was wrong to inflict cruelty on other living beings.
The question is not, “Can they reason?” nor, “Can they talk?” but “Can they suffer?”
Jeremy Bantham, Philosopher (1748 -1832)
For others, the battle can be a struggle, having been indoctrinated with the belief that a plant based diet cannot possibly give us all the nutrients we require to thrive. They are and have been, like myself, living in a society that hides the truth of how food is produced, and makes exploiting, using, eating and wearing Animal Products, the Dominant Cultural Norm.
As an Activist for the Rights of Non-Human beings, I never miss an opportunity to gently challenge people’s preconceptions as this is an extremely useful starting point for advocating a Vegan lifestyle. It can be a fine balancing act however, respecting people’s ( often misguided) views while raising awareness of my own. Discovering people’s most cherished principles, entering their world without prejudice or strong opinion isn’t easy, it takes tolerance through understanding.
Never be discouraged from being an Activist because people tell you that you won’t succeed. You have already succeeded if you’re out there representing Truth, Justice, Compassion, Fairness and Love.
Doris Haddock, American Political Activist
It can be hard to encourage someone to distant themselves from a powerful belief system as there is, no doubt, comfort in accepting what has been taught when they are young. Social Conditioning and Misleading Nutritional information can be hard barriers to break down.
It is, of course, possible for us to escape the worst aspect of our culture and upbringing if we want it enough or receive some form of enlightenments. Many Vegans can talk about the moment when they realised the connection between consuming and wearing Animal products and the Bloodshed and Murder that lies hidden beneath the surface and which perpetuates this lifestyle. I described my moment of awakening in Challenging Choices.
I believe that people will only change their views if a new conviction comes from within and it takes those who already hold true to that conviction to help make that choice, to become conscious of their true Values.
In this atomized world of ours, few of us know or care where our consumed products originate from, or what is happening in some distant corner of the globe when we buy our Hardwood Furniture, Food made with Palm Oil, Imported Fruit, Leather boots, Cheap Clothes and the like. However, I believe that most Human beings are Compassionate and Peaceful and once they truly bring themselves to explore the truth, connect the dots, as it were; they understand their participation in these Cruel Processes and they will desire and strive to limit their contribution to the Ignorance that perpetuates these evil practises.
Educating yourself does not mean that you were stupid in the first place; it means that you are intelligent enough to know that there is plenty left to learn.
As I have talked about two posts back, my emotional health can become very fragile if I take on too much information about the terrible things happening across Our planet, never more so, it seems than at this time. I try to hold onto the knowledge that things are altering for the better, that the narrative is changing. That there is an undercurrent of optimism and hope. At least, when I feel nothing but doom and gloom, that’s what people tell me!
So for those of you reading (are there any readers?!) who like me, feel the despair and hopelessness of the world all too heavily on your shoulders, I am told we should have confidence in the knowledge that there are deeper seeds of change edging their way towards their spring.
The times when we experience the most intense suffering, unbearable agony and seemingly insurmountable deadlock are actually brilliant opportunities for doing our human revolution.
I do believe that the Universe has a way of looking after us. For me, just as things are beginning to feel very gloomy and I can find little to feel joyful about, a Friend phones me to ask me to send her some Vegan Recipes. After 53 years of eating meat, she has not eaten meat since we last spent time together and has been cooking delicious vegan food! This knowledge has given me a much needed boost and It really makes me believe that, given the right support, information and advice, People will make changes. It doesn’t matter how fast or how slow, the important part is the fact that they are willing to explore the realm of different possibilities that can lead to living a Compassionate and Cruelty Free Lifestyle!
Yes, at times, it feels like things will never change, but then something arises and expresses deeper changes that have building beneath the surface, just as my friend has made a decision to cut out meat from her diet, a desire that has been bubbling away for some time, but which just needed a little push in the right direction! As I wrote about in Challenging Choices, it is these small victories, as people question their morals, that create the ripple effect that creates the wave!
A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind.
As Passionate and Ethical Vegans, we don’t get our authority from some existing paradigm which is narrow and incorrect, we constantly strive to create the revolution of consciousness to underpin the social change that would see people being widely and daily encouraged by public figures to change over to a plant based diet.
There are all sorts of revolutions: political, economic, scientific, artistic. Each has its own significance and, often, necessity. But no matter what one changes, the world will never get any better as long as people themselves—the guiding force and impetus behind all endeavors—remain selfish and lacking in compassion. In that respect, human revolution is the most fundamental of all revolutions, and at the same time, the most necessary revolution for humankind.
We All have choices to make, we Can stay in the Old World where Animals are treated solely as objects to satisfy Humans, or we can live by a New Ethic based on Respect and Compassion for all those we share the planet with.
When we change, the world changes. The key to all change is in our inner transformation, a change of our hearts and minds. This is human revolution. We all have the power to change. When we realise this truth, we can bring forth that power anywhere, anytime, and in any situation.
